“烈士”怎么翻译？

标题的“martyrs”用了双引号。为什么呢？显然是觉得这个词有点不太恰当。

查英文字典martyrs的词义是：

1. 因为宗教或者政治信仰而死的人。——> 近似翻译成“殉道者”。 a person who is killed because of their religious or political beliefs。

2. 贬义的。——> (usually disapproving) a person who tries to get sympathy from other people by telling them how much he or she is suffering

更合适的翻译是否应该是fallen heroes？
