Born in New York City to a middle-class Episcopalian family of writers, Huntington graduated from Stuyvesant High School at age sixteen and went on to complete his B.A. at Yale University “with exceptional distinction” in two and a half years. After serving briefly in the U.S. military, he completed his M.A. at the University of Chicago. He then moved to Harvard University, where, at age 23, a year before submitting his doctorate, he was appointed a junior member of the faculty in the Department of Government.
