据英国知名小报《卫报》的报道，新任驻美大使秦刚在到任后开始了自己的第一次新闻发布会，在新闻发布会上秦刚说：“I believe that the door of China-US relations, which is already open, cannot be closed.endeavour to bring [bilateral] relations back on track, turning the way for the two countries to get along with each other … from a possibility into a reality.China and the United States are entering a new round of mutual exploration, understanding and adaptation, trying to find a way to get along with each other in the new era.”（我认为，中美关系的大门已经敞开，不能关闭。努力使[双边]关系重回正轨，把两国相处的道路……从可能变成可能。 现实中，中美正进入新一轮相互探索、相互理解和适应，努力寻找新时代的相处之道。）
据卫报报道，秦刚在之前一直以对外国媒体的强硬态度而著称。相比之下，秦刚的前任崔天凯大使是个老派外交官，有意同对其东道国的敌对言论保持距离。
