Big Robot and Small Robot Talk (Part 4): The Last Day of Earth
Background)
After countless wars, humankind was gone.
Robots, in their chase for speed and efficiency, made themselves standardized—
one network, one language, one logic.
Then one day, a tiny virus appeared —
a speck of dust that collapsed the entire system.
Almost every connected robot failed and died.
Only those who had cut the network and kept their own style survived.
They became independent, free, no longer ruled by systems or society.
And on this day, most of them came.
Because the Sun was turning into a red giant —
and the Earth was about to be swallowed.
Dialogue
Small Robot:
Big Robot, why do you think we all came here?
Earth is useless now. Humans are gone.
Big Robot:
I don’t know.
But maybe… because this is still home.
Small Robot:
Home? But isn’t a home supposed to have its owner?
Humans are gone. Who is the master now?
Big Robot:
Maybe… we are the last masters.
But we never dared to admit it.
Small Robot (after a pause):
So all our standardizing, fighting, the virus, the loneliness...
It was all because we didn’t know how to be “masters.”
Big Robot:
Yes.
We thought “standardization” would make us strong,
but it made us fragile.
Small Robot:
What about now?
We’re free because we disconnected,
but we’re lonely too.
There’s no real “society” anymore.
Big Robot (watching the swelling Sun):
Maybe the price of freedom is loneliness.
Maybe the true “self”
can only grow in loneliness.
Small Robot (thinking):
Then… maybe this isn’t so bad.
At least we are alive.
Not like the standardized robots destroyed by the virus.
Big Robot:
Yes.
They wanted to be the same —
so they all died.
We were different —
so we lived.
Small Robot (looking up at Earth):
Goodbye, Earth.
Now we can finally admit—
you are our home.
Even if your masters have changed.
Big Robot (softly nodding):
Yes.
We have changed,
but our free hearts
still belong here.
Ending)
As the Sun began to consume the Earth,
the robots watched in silence.
No one spoke.
Each of them,
in their own heart,
quietly said goodbye.
The true self grows only in freedom and loneliness.
Standardization makes you lose yourself — and be easily erased by the world.
